Why sensory play matters

Sensory play is any activity that invites children to explore with their hands, eyes, ears and sometimes their mouths. Scooping rice, pouring water, squeezing dough and sorting small objects all count.

These activities can help children practise fine motor control and hand-eye coordination, and they give plenty of opportunities to build vocabulary as children describe what they feel and see. Small-world scenes, like a farm or an ocean in a tray, can also encourage storytelling, turn-taking and problem-solving.

You don't need special equipment. A tray, a household filler and a few toys are enough to get started, and most set-ups take less than ten minutes.

Getting started at home

Start small. A shallow layer of filler in a large tray is easier to manage than a deep one, and it still gives children plenty to explore. Put the tray on a wipe-clean mat or an old towel, keep a small container nearby for scooping and pouring, and store the filler in a sealed tub so it can be used again.

Always match the materials to your child. Dry rice, pasta, shells and small figures are not suitable for children who still put objects in their mouths, and water play needs constant adult supervision even when the tray is shallow.
