Why Educational Craft Kits Are the Perfect Screen-Free Activity for Young Children

Why Educational Craft Kits Are the Perfect Screen-Free Activity for Young Children

There’s only so much “Hey Duggee” a person can handle. I say this with deep love for Duggee and his Squirrels– but he’s no replacement for hands-on, real-world play.

With two small kids, school holidays, and a business to run, I’ve become a bit of a screen-time negotiator. So why would I set the kids up with a educational craft kit instead?

1. They support real-life skills

From pouring rice into a cup to snipping paper shapes, craft kits sneak in loads of early learning. Fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, early maths, even storytelling – all without a worksheet in sight.

2. They encourage creativity, not perfection

Craft isn’t about following instructions perfectly – it’s about exploring ideas, colours, textures and "what happens if I mix glitter with rice?". This is something I already see in our 4 year old, she really struggles if things are not exactly right.

But educational doesn’t have to mean “school-like”. The best kits let kids follow their curiosity. It is not about getting them to sit still (ahem Bridget Phillipson).

3. They help kids stay focused – really

Ever notice how a child completely zones in when they’re pouring, scooping, or creating something themselves? Craft kits tap into that natural focus and give it direction – it’s calming, confidence-boosting, and actually gives you a hot cuppa moment (sometimes).

In terms of being educational this links perfectly into creative writing, using adjectives to describe the world they are building or practicing alliteration just because it sounds fun!

4. They’re a parent-friendly win

Let’s be real: if it takes longer to set up than the playtime it gives you, it’s a no. That’s why I love a well-thought-out craft subscription – it’s a reliable break in your week, no extra prep, no mess you didn’t expect. We want you to be able to focus on making the memory not stressing about the tidy up!

At My Mini Maker, we create monthly educational craft kits that come with everything you need – just open and play. Our educational craft kits are designed by an Early Years expert to align with the EYFS framework and KS1 curriculum while supporting your child’s development.

If that sounds like something your household could use right now, you’re in the right place. We’ve got paint (contained), ideas (endless), and a whole lot of heart in every box here
