The Best Kids Craft Kits in the UK: What to Look for (And Where to Buy Them)
Let’s be honest – the summer holidays are LONG.
I say this as both a co-founder of My Mini Maker and a very tired mum of two little ones currently covered in glue and colouring pen. (No regrets – just no clean surfaces either.)
If you’re anything like me, you’re probably hunting for activities that:
-
Don’t involve a screen
-
Keep them happily busy for more than 6 minutes
-
Feel vaguely educational
-
Don’t require a last-minute Hobbycraft dash
Enter: kids craft kits. Specifically, the good ones. Here’s what I look for – as a mum, not just a maker.
1. It needs to be easy – for you
Craft should be fun for your child and stress-free for you. Look for kits that come with everything you need – no fiddly extras or complicated instructions. I love when a box just opens up and gets straight to the good bit.
2. It should support their development (without them knowing it)
The best craft kits don’t just entertain – they build skills. Fine motor control, early maths, imaginative play… it all counts. But your child? They’re just having fun.
3. It should spark their imagination
A great kit isn’t about producing a Pinterest-worthy masterpiece. It’s about open-ended play that gives your child freedom to explore, make a mess, and create something uniquely theirs.
Think playdough planets, rainbow rice jungles, or a mini bug hotel made from lolly sticks. If it gets them chatting, thinking, and exploring, that’s a win in my book.
4. It should feel like a treat – for both of you
A monthly craft box is like a little sigh of relief delivered through your letterbox. It’s an activity, a calm moment, and a chance to connect – without having to scroll Pinterest for hours first.
So, what are the best craft kits for kids in the UK?
There are lots of lovely ones out there; think Mud and Bloom, Cotton Twist or The Bear Can Read depending on what your little one is into. Our wee girl is obsessed with bracelet making right now, thanks Cotton Twist. But if you're looking for something:
-
Made for ages 3–7 so they are age appropriate
-
Aligned with EYFS learning goals
-
Packed with sensory materials
-
Designed by mums who get it
…then I’d love you to try My Mini Maker. We deliver sensory and craft kits for kids every month – themed, hands-on, and genuinely fun.
Even if you’re just surviving the school holidays like me – it’s one small win and might give you time for a hot cuppa ☕️✂️🌈
