The Passion Of Play: How Does Crafting Inspire Self-Discovery?
There has been a lot of crafting going on in our house over the last week, (courtesy of the Great British Weather). Between watching them stick together planes, carefully choosing colours and staring out the window I got to thinking. When do we start to figure out what we are passionate about? When do we realise we love baking, numbers or writing stories? I realised that drizzly afternoon, clutching a hot cuppa as they were locked into imagination- that’s exactly what they were doing. Exploring passions. And it turns out science says crafting is truly one of the best ways to discover who we are and what we are passionate about.
How Does Crafting Inspire Self-Discovery?
Finding ways to completely switch off and immerse ourselves in ‘just being’ is getting harder by the app! From online lessons, video games to recipes - it seems there is a screen for everything these days. So what gives?
Explore Skills
Crafting provides a few hours to get hands on, explore skills and discover new ones. Some of us may love to draw, some of us are allergic to numbers (hands up) while some of us relish in storytelling. Our craft kits are carefully designed to put different skills to the test, allowing your Mini Makers to explore what they enjoy. This allows them to develop new skills at their own pace. It may take a few kits to master focus and planning while other skills may come naturally. Sometimes taking a step back and letting them figure things out through play is the best way to allow for the joy of self-discovery and a real sense of achievement.
Creative Flow
Being immersed in a crafting activity allows Mini Makers to tap into their creative flow. This is a powerful space for ideas, imagination and self-discovery. They can explore ideas and ways of doing things that are unique to them. We all learn differently and being locked into creative flow allows for a deeper level of understanding. We learn what we are passionate about, how to access our highest potential and discover our hidden talents.
Yep- There is a whole lot more going on with those paint brushes than you think.
The Love Of Learning
Developing a healthy relationship with learning can be challenging for parents (and teachers) . It can feel like something they have to do as opposed to something that they get to do. Allowing them the space to craft, play and figure things out on their own inspires wonder and a genuine connection with the magic of learning. The positive emotions such as excitement, achievement and curiosity become linked with learning without any convincing. This is one of the biggest surprises of crafting - the magic really is in the making.
How’s Best To Introduce Crafting To Little Ones?
The great thing about our craft kits is each one is linked to a theme, from space to the seaside - this allows Mini Makers to explore new worlds in the comfort of home. Every month offers a new adventure with four activities testing different skills and allowing for the fun and magic of self-discovery. You can explore our different kits here and choose something that will be perfect for your little one. For a surprise - why not subscribe? You get crafty savings and a new theme every month. So you can put the kettle on and let them discover passions through play - one fun afternoon at a time.
Crafty Take Aways
Finding ways to allow little ones to explore passions and develop skills without resorting to screens is a challenge for all of us. Crafting is the gift that keeps on giving. Being immersed in imagination and focused on hands-on play accesses a deeper level of learning and self-discovery. To introduce crafting to your little one, start with choosing a kit based around a theme that they are excited about.
Who knows, you could inspire dreams of becoming astronauts, sailors or bug scientists all from the kitchen table.
