Free Crown Craft Activity: Building Coordination

Make a crown from card, coloured triangles and whatever gems and stickers you have. Fun to make and even better to play with afterwards.

Staple two card strips into a headband, glue on 10 to 12 coloured triangles, decorate with gems and stickers, and staple it into a crown. Ages 3 to 7, about 30 minutes plus drying.

What could be better than making your own crown? It is fun to make and even better to play with. Using scissors builds hand-eye coordination, and the dressing-up that follows builds language, turn-taking and the ability to follow simple directions.

You will need

White card
Coloured card
Gems, stickers and pom-poms, whatever you have
Glue
Stapler
Scissors

How to set it up

Cut two strips of white card about 7cm wide and staple them into one long strip.
Wrap it around your child's head to measure, and trim the excess.
Cut 10 to 12 coloured triangles, about 10cm tall and 7cm wide at the base.
Let your child glue the triangles along the headband.
Decorate with gems, stickers and pom-poms.
Once dry, staple the ends together to make the crown.

Why it helps

Using scissors develops hand-eye coordination as children watch where they are cutting and plan the next move. Wearing the crown afterwards leads into imaginative play, which builds language, turn-taking and the ability to follow simple directions.
